Solo viendo el título del noveno episodio de esta segunda temporada de Boardwalk Empire uno ya se imagina el paralelismo que se va a producir, y al final se cumple. El hecho histórico que sirve para situar temporalmente los acontecimientos de la serie es el combate entre el campeón de los pesos pesados Jack Dempsey y el aspirante al título Georges Carpentier, una lucha que, investigando un poco, descubrimos que tuvo lugar el 2 de julio de 1921 y que levantó una expectación que justifica su presencia aquí.
Pero no solo eso, sino que sirve también como metáfora de lo que está ocurriendo en Atlantic City entre esos dos púgiles que son Nucky Thompson, que sería el defensor del título, y Jimmy Darmody, que aspiraría al mismo. Veremos cómo se desarrollan ambas contiendas, pero vamos a entrar ya en materia. La semana pasada vimos a Nucky dar un paso atrás y ceder, por lo menos verbalmente, su “trono” a los hombres del Comodoro Kaestner, encabezados por el hijo de este, y pupilo de Nucky hasta hace poco, Jimmy Darmody. Sabíamos, sin embargo, que no se quedaría con los brazos cruzados, y efectivamente tenía un as en la manga. Para ello se lleva a Owen a la convulsa Irlanda, adonde se presenta con el ataúd de su padre, nativo del que todavía no era estado independiente, para enterrarlo en la tierra que lo vio crecer.

Este acontecimiento es observado desde lejos por Clifford Lathrop, el subordinado de Esther Randolph, que a su vez es la Asistente del Fiscal General de los Estados Unidos.
Cuando se lo cuenta en la cama —sí, están liados, aunque en todo momento ella lo trata con frialdad, por lo menos “después de”, y recordándole que sigue siendo su jefa— la Randolph se sorprende porque en teoría Nucky Thompson se ha ido a Irlanda a enterrar a su padre. Ello da lugar al interrogatorio del subsheriff Halloran, que ha asistido al entierro, ya que el jefe de la policía, Eli, no atiende a las citaciones del FBI. Y en la conversación la pareja (nunca mejor dicho) descubre que Nucky controla (o controlaba) incluso los nombramientos dentro de la policía, un dato que les ayuda a construir el caso contra él, porque además sospechan que la noche del asesinato de Hank Schroeder, el difunto marido de Margaret, tanto Eli como Halloran estuvieron implicados de alguna forma.
Con la policía terminamos ya, porque a Van Alden no le vemos el pelo esta vez. Parece que no termine de encajar en esta temporada, aunque es difícil creer que lo guionistas no tienen nada preparado para él, así que seguiremos confiando en que nos sorprendan. El atentado contra la vida de Munya se lleva a cabo, pero sale mal. Horvitz solo recibe un balazo en el hombro y se carga al ayudante de Gordon de una forma muy acorde con su profesión oficial (y de paso nos regala otra escena gore, con lo que ya van unas cuantas esta temporada). Sabe perfectamente quién lo ha enviado y, mientras Jimmy y Richard están disfrutando del combate de boxeo en un auditorio abarrotado donde hay una radio, Darmody recibe una nota en la que le avisan: “te estoy vigilando“. No se lo toma muy en serio —demostrando una gran imprudencia— y sigue a lo suyo, hasta le vienen dos muchachas que saben que es el nuevo rey de la ciudad y empiezan a liarse tanto con él como con el pobre Richard, que no está muy animado últimamente. “Qué diablos… algo de que hablar cuando seamos viejas”, dice la que se va con el de la media máscara tras pensárselo unos segundos.
Ahora sí volvemos a Irlanda, donde Nucky se encuentra con John McGarrigle, el hombre al que dio dinero para financiar la lucha del IRA contra Inglaterra y que a cambio le cedió a Owen. Es partidario de dejar la lucha armada, puesto que “ya se ha derramado suficiente sangre”, pero buena parte de sus asociados no lo ve igual. El mismo Owen, que ya sabemos que es amante de todo lo que sea la violencia, muestra su descontento ante el que en teoría sigue siendo su jefe, y rechaza su ofrecimiento de volver bajo su ala. Está claro que Owen ha cambiado, lo apunta el mismo McGarrigle, y que la vida en los Estados Unidos le está gustando bastante más que la que puede ofrecerle su patria natal. Además, sabiendo lo que sabemos nosotros… como para quedarse en Irlanda otra vez, ¿verdad? Tonto no es.
Por otro lado Nucky intenta comprar alcohol, dando el negocio de las armas por perdido, pero también le dicen que no: como parece que habrá paz con los ingleses, los negocios volverán a su cauce, los británicos volverán a ser sus principales clientes y no necesitarán venderle alcohol a Nucky, menos aún cuando el de Atlantic City está sin blanca y propone pagar cuando obtenga beneficios. De todas formas, para dar una respuesta definitiva quieren esperar a que se resuelvan las negociaciones con el enemigo británico, y eso para Nucky sería inaceptablemente lento.
Frustrado decide marcharse, pero nada más arrancar vemos, a lo lejos, cómo uno de los hombres de McGarrigle se lo carga de un tiro en la nuca. El hombre que acompaña a Nucky en el coche, apellidado Neilan, que evidentemente está enterado de todo, le dice a nuestro protagonista que de ahora en adelante tratará con él y que lo del intercambio de armas por alcohol le parece una idea estupenda. Owen también lo sabía, y Nucky le advierte que no le gustan los secretos. Tampoco debe de gustarle que haya sido capaz de traicionar a su jefe, al que conocía desde hacía muchos años. ¿Acaso teme que un día le ocurra lo mismo a él? ¿Qué pasará cuando descubra el otro secreto de Owen, uno que le afecta directamente?
Ya en el puerto la alegría de Nucky se convierte en desconcierto al recibir por telegrama la chocante noticia de la grave enfermedad de la niña que desde hace un tiempo le llama “papá”. Mientras tanto tiene lugar el combate del siglo, Dempsey contra Carpentier, que varios de los personajes de la serie siguen por radio, como ya hemos dicho Darmody y Richard entre ellos. Esta vez los créditos no los leemos con música de fondo, sino con los últimos compases del combate, que merece la pena escuchar: el vigente campeón llega a estar contra las cuerdas pero finalmente sale vencedor. Si alguien más ve el paralelismo que hay con la lucha Thompson-Darmody se puede imaginar más o menos por dónde van a ir los tiros. Veremos si es cierto en los tres últimos capítulos que quedan de esta temporada. Porque en esta lucha también habrá solo uno que quede en pie.

excelente artículo, pero yo no puedo ver que este capítulo se puntúa con un 3 y 1/2. Esta serie es de lejos la que mejor nivel ofrece en la TV y los últimos capítulos son joyas visuales. No sé cómo trataran a los personajes de Al Capone y Luciano pero espero q en las próximas temporadas lejos de abandonarlos se nos muestre la evolución de sus vidas.-
